Silicone oils are used in a very wide temperature range. Products are available for lower than -100 °C as well as for higher than 430 °C. The viscosity is less temperature dependent compared to mineral oils or synthetic aromatic heat transfer fluids.
In heat transfer technology, the term silicone oil is commonly used to describe polydimethylsiloxanes.
Polydimethylsiloxanes are polymers that consist of silicon oxygen chains saturated with methyl groups. Under thermal stress, rearrangement reactions of the silicon oxygen bonds take place until a chemical balance is achieved.
Due to their material properties, silicone oils represent an ideal basis for the formulation of bath fluids for open applications in laboratories.
Both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, but also higher alcohols, ethers and esters may be used as cleaning agents.
Specially formulated silicone oils or phenylmethylsiloxanes are well suited as bath fluid in open applications. The high thermal and oxidation stability reduces deposits in thermostats; the lifetime of the devices used is increased. In addition, these products feature high flash points and low evaporation losses.
